Background of the Study

Cervical cancer remains a significant public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Treatment adherence is crucial for achieving optimal outcomes in cervical cancer care. Nurse-led counseling has been identified as an effective intervention to enhance adherence by providing patients with education, emotional support, and personalized care plans.

In Kano State, Nigeria, the burden of cervical cancer is substantial, and challenges such as limited healthcare resources, cultural beliefs, and low health literacy may impede treatment adherence. Implementing nurse-led counseling interventions could potentially address these challenges and improve adherence rates among cervical cancer patients.

Statement of the Problem

Non-adherence to cervical cancer treatment regimens can lead to disease progression, reduced survival rates, and increased healthcare costs. Factors contributing to non-adherence include lack of understanding of the disease and its treatment, fear of side effects, and socioeconomic constraints. Nurse-led interventions have shown promise in improving adherence in various chronic conditions.

However, the effectiveness of such interventions specifically for cervical cancer patients in Kano State has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to evaluate the impact of nurse-led counseling on treatment adherence among this patient population.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the current level of treatment adherence among cervical cancer patients in Kano State.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling in improving treatment adherence.

3. To identify barriers to treatment adherence and how nurse-led counseling addresses these barriers.

Research Questions

1. What is the current rate of treatment adherence among cervical cancer patients in Kano State?

2. How effective is nurse-led counseling in enhancing treatment adherence among these patients?

3. What barriers to treatment adherence exist, and how does nurse-led counseling mitigate them?

Research Hypotheses

1. Cervical cancer patients in Kano State exhibit suboptimal treatment adherence rates.

2. Nurse-led counseling significantly improves treatment adherence among cervical cancer patients.

3. Nurse-led counseling effectively addresses barriers to treatment adherence.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on cervical cancer patients receiving treatment in selected healthcare facilities in Kano State. Data will be collected through patient interviews, adherence monitoring tools, and medical record reviews. Limitations may include potential biases in self-reported adherence, variability in counseling implementation, and challenges in controlling for external factors influencing adherence.

Definitions of Terms

• Treatment Adherence: The extent to which patients follow prescribed medical regimens, including attending appointments and taking medications as directed.

• Nurse-Led Counseling: A supportive intervention provided by nurses that includes education, emotional support, and guidance to help patients manage their health conditions.

• Cervical Cancer: A type of cancer that occurs in the cells of the cervix, often associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.
